  • How wildlife friendly are those organic slug pellets?

    Hi there,

I had super-sized slugs with orange go-faster stripes when I took over my plot, some twice the size of my thumb:
    https://greengardengate.wordpress.com/2014/05/23/day-26-on-the-allotment/#jp-carousel-467

A few of my allotment neighbours further down the hill use the cheaper non-organic blue sweeties with success and warned me that the organic ones wouldn't touch the blighters.

I have been using them sparingly for about 8 months now, and I have to say they appear to be pretty good of late. Not knowing the intimate details of slugs carnal activity of course this could be normal for this time of year...

According to the guff online and the packaging, I am reassured that they degrade down to a fertiliser and any birds/amphibians/hedgehogs that might eat the resulting dead/dying slugs will be unharmed. These are the only manufactured chemical that I use on the plot (I do use fish oils for pests and seaweed feed too).

I guess I would like to hear from anyone who *knows* whether they are as wildlife friendly as they claim?

    Thanking you!

I'm sure the posterTwo Sheds on here swears by them - which is good enough for me.

Yep - I would also like to know not only for my new lottie (beams with pride and backache) but also for the little critters in our garden. I really don't want to use the standard affects all kind of pellet.

I've emailed them to ask for the COSHH safety data sheet so we'll see what else is in there if they send me that

But everything in the world can kill you if you have too much of it... even kindness. Take what i posted with a pinch of salt (and throw it on the slugs). There's always something on the internet to make you worry, unnecessarily in a lot of cases.

                              Non organic slug pellets....

Slug poison found in one in eight of England's drinking water sources | Environment | The Guardian

Looks to me that if the so called organic ones are said to work as well as the non organic, then if you REALLY need to use pellets , then organic ones are the ones to go for.

Thing is , they DO affect animals...particularly dogs and earthworms over a period of times...and possibly other wildlife such as hedgehogs.

I think it's down to you folks to decide how organic you want to be.
Maybe try more natural methods such as beer baits, copper bands, salt, upturned rhubarb leaves, regular handpicking etc ( please add ones I've not mentioned!).....
And of course the best way of all, encouraging birds and hedgehogs to visit your plot by providing natural habitats.

Perhaps a combination of the above, and targeting specific plants rather than just chucking organic pellets everywhere is the way to go?

                              As I said...never easy.

Good thread by the way....I've learnt a lot about slug pellets over the past 24 hrs!
