    Grass Heap

    My youngest son came this morning and has cut the grass. As Sheffield Council have not decided what is happening with the green waste collection, I wouldn't let him bag it up, but asked him to pile it up against the fence, where I hope it will rot down. My question is, do I have to cover it?

    I'd be looking out for a few pallets to make a compost heap including one as a barrier between your compost and the existing fence to prevent rot damage to the fence. That will prevent your compost drying out from the sides. I don't cover my compost heap over the top and make exceedingly good compost.

      I'd use it for a mulch on your veg. It makes an excellent mulch as I found out last year.

        Thank you Mr Kipling! I haven't enough room for a pallet compost heap AP, I have two daleks, but thanks for the tip about the fence.

          You don't want it anywhere in layers more than about 2" thick: it could go slimy, smelly or burst into flames.

            I do mulch with it Zaz, but there's an awful lot left over and I thought it might rot down into a bit of a "border" with some depth that I could plant into.

              I've put some in the daleks TS and mulched, so it's Hobson's choice really unless I want to bag it and wait until the council decide what they're going to do, or take it to the tip. What if I cover it with compost now? Would that work?

                Flo,do yourself a favour & move it away from any thing combustible,unless it was cut when totally dry there is a very real risk of spontaneous combustion if the sun gets on it.

                        Moved and I didn't feel a thing, including the earth Having thought about it (and worried), I realised it rained most of the night last night, so surely that lessens the likelihood of it being combustible? Fingers crossed.

                              Ay up TS,have you heard of an artist called Ken Tidd ? He was a near neighbour of mine,he lost his garden shed & most of the contents to spontaneous combustion of the lawn clippings he had stacked against it.

                              99% of barn fires (excluding vandalism & arson) are caused by it as well,one damp bail is enough,hence the old adage ....... Make hay while the sun shines ...... after cutting the grass should be left to surface dry,it is the turned with a tedder & left again to surface dry,it is then turned again with the tedder (on a different setting) to form "wind rows" which are in due course baled.
