In years gone by the contents of the earth closet were always either put on the muck heap or dug straight into the garden. Personally I would compost it along with grass cuttings etc for a couple of years before using it,and then only on flower beds!!

Well, that's what the Night Soil was that went on the fields in the past. We're all still here!

I've just got round to reading the book, and it shows how long or how hot the heap needs to be to be "safely" used on the garden. In a nutshell, the hotter it gets the safer, or if the heap is cool you just leave it for longer (1-2 years). The author uses his own muck on his crops and has done for 26 years

Raw uncomposted sewage on the soil is a recipe for disease though.

The book shows you how to safely compost human waste, and is very thorough & scientific about the different processes.

Suddenly our own system (dumping in our drinking water) seems really really unsanitary

But you don't need to buy the book, all the info is in the link from Snadger's post

I've downloaded the one on Snadger's link. Should make for interesting bed time reading.

If you have a Kindle, you can download the PDF from Snadger's link, and still be able to read it on the dunny
