  • blackberry bushes in pots?

hiya-can i grow blackberry bushes in pots? if so what size pot do i need?

i brought two "thornless evergreen" blackberrys bushes from aldi yesterday, and was wondering if i can grown them in a pot-what size would i need diameter/depth wise?

have had a quick google, but all i can find out is that i can grow them in pots/containers but cant find a size guide for fruit bushes for pots

anyone have one at all,or point me in the right direction for one!

    thanks-jennie

Pots for blackberries should be 18"diameter and 2 foot deep as a minimum size guide.

I purchased a blackberry Black Butte from Marshalls last year. Knowing how vigorous they tend to be I made my own container out of planking.

I made it 26" square and 30" deep and I am glad I did, I got a little fruit but expected that. After pruning back last years growth the new runners for this years fruit grew at an alarming rate. They had grown 3ft up canes and then a further 8 or 9 foot along a trellis before I had to stop them.

For anyone thinking of purchasing a blackberry I can recommend a Black Butte it does exactly what it says on the tin. Last year (the first year of growth) I collected about a pound of fruit all huge berries and very sweet. Now we are into the second year I hope for much more.

Hmmm ... I bought a Navaho bramble plant back in November and it's just sat in my garage window over winter. However, it's actually starting to grow now so I'm going to plant it out. I've got a big terracotta pot about 18" across and a foot deep, plus a wooden v-shape fan trellis thingummy to stick in the pot for it to grow up. I have no idea how high it will grow though. Three feet for the Black Butte seems very high!

So, as this is the first year I'll have had the bramble plant, does that mean it should fruit only lightly this year and more heavily in subsequent years?

The back of my thornless evergreen bramble says it will fruit in Year 2. As the 'plant' is currently a cane with a few roots, I'm guessing yours is more advanced than mine!

Fruit grows on established branches/shoots and stuff, so the less you prune it, the more fruit you'll get (same as fruit trees) but then, you'd be overrun by blackberry plants!

My evergreen blackberry was an impulse buy by the other half - I REFUSE to let him put it in the ground, I know how those things can spread! He thinks I'm being mean too!

I've got mine in a pathetic 15cm plastic pot - the packaging said the soil should come up to the previous soil mark on the cane, but it only just makes that. How are blackberries about being repotted? I stuck mine in the biggest pot I had at short notice just to get it out of the plastic wrap!

Blackberries are weeds; they're quite difficult to kill.
Re-plant it at whatever depth you please - it'll be fine.

You could probably hack off the top and re-pot the roots upside down and the blasted thing would re-grow from the roots after a few months (not that I recommend it).
