Daft questiuons...............have dates ben cooked when you buy them or just dried?

They are a fruit I presume?

Is it worth trying to sow some seeds from the punnet of cheap dates I've just bought and have any grapes had success doing this?

I do believe they are dried, and yes are a fruit, you could have a vine challenge going, but i thought as they grow in hotter climates, they would not be any good here, unless in a heated place,

Stick some in and have a go. I assume that you just want to see if they germinate and not that you're trying to grow your own dates as I somehow doubt date palms will make it on your plot. Being sub tropical they like heat and sun.

The Canary Island Date Palm might be hardy enough (with a bit of wrapping) but AFAIK there's very little flesh on the fruits and I wouldn't know where to get the fruit from to save the seed.

The Jelly palm might also be hardy enough. The sun bit may be a problem.

As I understand it they would require an Arabian level of heat, if you get that in Newcastle send me an estate agents number as I would be moving asap...

The Jelly Palm is shorter, edible, hardier and from South America so would fit in with the generalk theme of your plot

Not that I have in any way researched palm tees or thought about growing them in the Jungle at all. They also seem to need 30 degrees centigrade to germinate.

Did them once out of curiosity and got some to germinate in ordinary house heat.

I'm sure I grew some from date stones once, but can't remember whether they were dried dates or fresh.

It'll give the passion flower and grape vine something to grow up.

I'm a bit gutted that all this passion fruit growth is for nowt, as appaerntly it dies down to the ground for the winter!

Grape vine appears to have shot its bolt for this year also!

my old passionfruit lasted outside over 4 winters and only gave up the ghost when we had that cold -16deg winter in 2010/11 for over a month, brass monkeys or what?, and we had a good few fruit off it, the one outside is in full flower now, late because of the weather, but should produce next year if we get some sun..
