    Thinking of buying a grafted grapevine...

    I will be guided by Monty Don's choice of Lakemont, a sweet seedless eating grape. I already have a couple of seeded vines, purple and pink which I just grew from cuttings.

    The Lakemont is a grafted grape and i wondered why it was grafted? Would this be a dwarfing rootstock or is it because its own roots are not prodigeous?

    I also wonderd about growing it in a container?

    Any info would be helpful.

    I've just bought a Lakemont and a Phoenix from Blackmoors. Both grafted. Lovely strong plants which I've planted into the soil in the netted 24' GH. They were delivered with grapes still attached so I've already tasted them

      Lots of European grapes are grafted. It's because of a blight called Phyloxerra which started about 150 years ago. The American grapes are immune but it devestated most European crops.

        Well, I've bit the bullet and ordered a grafted Lakemont from Groves Nurseries. Lets hope my vine has some grapes on it!: Not that i mistrust Monty!

          Took delivery today. Rather dismayed there were no grapes on vine. The packing material was hay, so the chooks are in for a treat!
          I hope it will thrive ok in a large pot as I would like to take it from the allotment to my retirement home in a couple of years.

                  Zimmer frame will be good plant protection if covered with netting!
