  • Amaryllis bulb in water?

I have just received from T & M a bulb for Amaryllis Apple Blossom. Not sure why so thanks GYO as I suspect you are involved (parcel addressed to shirl the girl).

Now I have a query, the instructions say to plant in soil or to grow in water with charcoal. Now I have loads of houseplants and rather fancy doing the Amaryllis in a vase of water (I have a vase which fits the bulb nicely too) but the instructions say to put charcoal in the water. Is this to reduce smelly water or for some other reason? Can I use BBQ charcoal or is that not going to do the job right? Anything else I can use or can I leave it in just water?

    Cheers peeps.

I have always fancied an Amaryllis but never been brave enough to buy a bulb!

        Glad it arrived, Shirl

I've never grown one in water ... just pop it in a 5" pot with some compost, covering about half the bulb (the top half is above the soil). Water lightly, give it light, not too much heat.

it should grow about an inch a day, if not more

You are naughty! There was no need for that. Thank you ever so much though

It is now growing in water (just don't need a tall plant in a pot for the cat to knock over) and safely out of cat reach. Can't wait to see what the flower is like as the images on google look lovely.

Apple blossom's a cracker! If you give them a rest in summer and then water/feed them up in late autumn they'll grow and flower in successive years for you.

Charcoal is added to most bulb planting mediums as the bulbs are usually grown in pots without drainage. The charcoal helps to 'sweeten' the compost and stop it going sour from being moist all the time!

                  Amaryllis won't flower

Did your T&M Amaryllis ever flower? I purchased four giant bulbs at Christmas, planted as instructed, but I only have leaves, I'm very disappointed as was looking forward to a wonderful display

The sprouts appeared last week and are growing at a great speed now - about 4 inchies tall.

Some of them do come up blind .. but all four, that is really unlucky.

I have a four year old Amaryllis that spent one growing season in water with no soil and it flowered OK. Otherwise I put them in soil. I think I read on here that they are forced so as to flower for Christmas time? I assumed that they would naturally revert to flowering in Summer, but mine flower around mid winter every year! How do I get them to flower in Summer?
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

Wow, one of the 'sprouts' on mine looks like leaves, the other looks more round so could be a flower stalk
