  • Convolvulus flowers

I realise most gardeners are not going to allow convolvulus (bindweed) to reach flowering stage, most having a mission to grub out every tiny tendril that pops up, but I noticed something about the flowers today that I've never noticed before. They have WHITE pollen. I was watching some bees in and out of the flowers growing in a hedgerow, and their pollen sacs were filed with pure white. When you look into a convolvulus flower, it is a picture of pure white.

Is that odd? Are there any other flowers that have pollen that is not the standard yellow or orangey yellow? I've always just assumed that all pollen was yellow

Bindweed flowers are beautiful, aren't they? I never noticed the pollen - must go and have a look.

By coincidence, I've just been showing a neighbour how to "Make Granny pop out of her nightdress" - but we've popped them all so I can't check on the pollen

Did you really think I'd lost it, Nicos
I knew there were different names for it - but I rarely meet anyone who knows about it! We always did it as kids and I still do now. I've just taught my 83 year old neighbour who is going to show her grandkids
If you do nothing else new today - go out and pop a Granny or two

I've never heard it called granny pop out of your nightdress, we always called it granny pop out of bed

Always used to get told off by my Mum when she saw me doing this, for damaging flowers, even though they are considered weeds.

Phacelia pollen is purple/blue. The bees are all purple when they come out

Edit: gotta add this - I've literally spent hours (no lie) on my plot, watching the bees all over my plants - they've mostly set seed now, but you can still see them coming out high on the pollen - it's awesome. Get some, grow some and watch it for yourself! I might have enough seed to put in one of the circles I'm in, though I'm being greedy with it though as it's just amazing. Here's a picture I found on the internet of it - though in real life it's much more vibrant:

Back on topic though yes, I find the bind weed flowers quite attractive - it's all over hedgerows around me at the moment.

Isn't that amazing! Blue pollen. Is that phacelia as in green manure chris? I've got some of that but chop it down before it flowers. Going out now to scatter some among the flower beds, although it's probably too late for flowering this year.

Yes - I left about 10 plants to flower - you could hear the buzzing of the bees before you even reached my plot when it was in full flower!

Sown now it'll flower next year, if the winter is mild enough for it to flower - I'll be sowing some next month again, though a lot of mine has already dropped a load of seeds everywhere
