  • flowers for bees

I am hoping that some of you can help me

I will be moving into a new house and am planning on keeping bees. the house is in the country and so i would like some tippically country flowers that will flower every year and that the bees will like, obvioulsly i have already got a lot of lavender but i would like some that don't need much caring for and that could probably be mown over at the end of the flowering season... or that i could have a combination so that there is always something there.

names and sowing and flowering times would be greatly aprechiated.

    many thanks

    Bzzzzz.

    Howdy.
Take a look at this link, its from the Bumble conservation Trust, and its about gardening for Bee's.

I planted a lot of scabious and echinacea late last year in my Garden and have been rewarded with loads of different species of bumble bees this year,. I liked the site so much I have joined up and received free seeds.

If you type Bees into the search you should get much more info.

Simple flowers are best(single row of petals) then they can get to the nectar easily. As for plants, Hebe's, Lavender (mines alive with them) Buddlia, Verbena Bonnariensis

Crocus, Ivy flowering currant and Sedums (Ice plants) these extend the season

I have bees all over my herb garden, they love the mint, thyme, chive and sage flowers, i also have a large pot of red clover (just for the bees), bees love borrage as well, but left unchecked it'll self seed all over.

Of course, sowing a mix of annual flowers is always welcome by the bees, at the end of the season you can always mow em down and start again, for best results use poor soil, or grass will become a nuisance.

We visited the White Horse Country Show today and they had lots of stalls selling honey, candles, furniture polish etc. One of the stalls had hives on show and I picked up one of the leaflets as I signed up to a save the bees campaign. The leaflet lists all the plants from which bees collect nectar for the production of honey in the south west.

Major Honey Plants are: Plum & Damson, Cherry,Pear,Apple, Dandelion, Hawthorn, Sycamore, Blackberry, Field Bean, Raspberry, Sainfoin, Borage. Feb through to June.

              July through to October
Bell Heather, Black berry, Limes, White Clover, Willow Herb, Borage, Ling, Mustard,Red Clover.

If you pm me your addy I will put a copy in the post to you.

              Hope this helps.
