  • Polytunnel help

    Hi

I`m looking to add a 6x6/6x8 polytunnel on to an existing greenhouse. The frame will be made from plastic water pipe.

My question is, what do i need to calculate to get the right length of pipe for the arches ?

    Thank you

Depends what height you want the hoops to support the tunnel I guess?

Also if you are using scaff bars to sink the pipes on and how high the scaff bars will be?
Life should be more like Bonsai...

Being non mathematical I would just use some pipe, hold or tie it in place, then measure it.

I think that might have to be the route i take Bill.

If you were going to make a 6' circle, you would need 18.852 of pipe (6 x 3.142 [pi]).
          So half a circle will be 18.852 / 2 = 9.426 of pipe.

Add whatever depth of pipe you want it sink into the ground, say 3' each side? 9.426+6= 15.426' for each poly support.

          I think.

I presume that is 9.426 in feet per arc ?, that would give me a head height of 6 feet ?.

I had planned on sinking steel rods into the ground and fitting the pipe over these as opposed to just sticking the pipe directly into the ground, that was so i can add some postcrete to each rod.

            Thanks Pete.

The maths are correct, but I have yet to see a poly tunnel the is a true half circle shape. I would go with Bill's idea, much less faff and you wouldn't waste any pipe.

                Noooooooooooooo!

I've not been able to get to update my maths since I've posted!

Honestly, I started sweating thinking I'd got the maths wrong!

                It's a 12' circle, not 6'....

                So don't divide by 2!

Still add the extra for below low ground level...

                Go for 19-20'' of pipe.

                Pete

Thanks for posting that BigMally, virtually what mine is going to look like. Although i`m going with a polythene cover, but the greenhouse is the same.

I had priced mine up originally at £73 which was for a 8x6. But that would have meant removing a Damson tree. So i have down scaled it to 6x6. By doing that it brings it down to £63

Construction was round conduit with t-pieces and x-pieces to create side and pitch support.

Sorry Guys! Been a very busy week!

                            .

Then drilled in some "Threaded bar" to tweek n square it all up. That was the basic framing, then I sheeted it in corrugated plastic!

Cost! Bar n pipping rummaged from skips, plastic sheeting £125, but I wanted a quality job, so was prepared to shed a few notes!

But well pleased with the outcome!

And hopefully last a good few years! 

                              Hi Dean.

First off great job. Like i mentioned further up your finished job is how mine will turn out, fingers crossed. I have virtually the same GH as yourself.
Couple of questions if you don`t mind. Did you consider removing the door structure from the GH ?, and what did you use to bridge the gap between the GH and the PT ?

                              Cheers mate.
