  • Water pipe (blue) tomake hoops for netting??

I am sure I have read somewhere that it is possible to make hoops from offcuts of blue water pipe and that this way you can make the hoops as small or as large as needed. Can we discuss this please? Need to know where to get the pipe from, costs etc.

I believe screw fix and wikes sell it for about 25 quid for 50 metres 25mm internal diameter which is probably the best thickness as 50mm tends to be used to make polytunnels I found some yellow pipe lying around the side if the road enough to make a small one

Yes, lots of places sell it. Blue mdpe pipe, I got a 50 metre roll delivered, might have been from Screwfix like this one MDPE Blue Pipe 25mm x 50m | MDPE Pipe | Screwfix.com

I just cut pieces the right length with a hacksaw to make hoops. All my beds are 54 inches wide and 2.5 metre lengths are perfect. One hoop for every metre or so of bed: I push a piece of cane into the ground and push the pipe over the cane, then cover with 3 metre wide scaffold netting.

I have used 20mm (external) alkathene pipe, purely because we had a roll at work going spare!

it is quite thin, however my frame is 3ft x 6ft which is big enough for a few maincrop carrots, I just have to staple the micromesh on now and I'm done.

Its made from pressure treated 2 by 2, the wood was only £4-£5, the netting was the expensive part.

I'll try to get some photo's when I'm back up the plot!

I made a walk in cage but also use blue pipe for low level nets using the same principle. Push short sticks into the ground and slip the pipe over them to form the hoops then tie a cane across the top of the hoops to stop the net pulling them in.

Never walk past a skip without having a furtle. Get pally with your local plumber and get his off cuts.

25mm, it would have stood to be thicker but it certainly does the job. The wood by the way was all freebie second hand tanalised fencing. It saved the contractors a two hour round trip to the tip plus a hundred pound tipping fee.

Are there any restriction on just how high this can be?

                          Great job by the way.

Pictures of my 9 year old, slave labour, constructing mine:

Brassica Netting – against Cabbage White Butterfly | K's Garden

                            My thoughts:

Get 3M wide scafolders debris netting - seems wide, but you won't have any cropping height otherwise.

Thus you need 3M "hoops" - so 25M roll will make 8 hoops.

I stick short canes into the ground, and Blue pipe onto those - holds it more sturdy than pipe straight into ground.

Replace scaffolders debris netting with wide-mesh bird netting before the first Winter snowfall - weight of snow will collapse debris netting, hoops AND crop

For Enviromesh over Carrots less width / cropping height is required.
