  • Editing Photos For Uploading on Android

You’ve taken your photos and you want to share them with everyone on the Vine, but either you cant upload them or they appear on their sides. You may need to edit your photo to upload it.

You could wait until you get home, load them onto a PC and edit them there or you could use an app to edit them on your phone.

There’s a lot of android based apps for editing. The app I use is “Photo Editor” and that’s what I’m going to use in this guide. If you use another app you can use this guide to get the gist of what to do and apply it to your app.

    Cropping Photos

Sometimes your photos are able to upload but are appearing on their side because the Vine isn’t able to figure out the right way to display them. Cropping a small amount off the edges of an image and re-saving it as a new image can resolve this problem. If you need to resize the image to upload it then you DON'T need to do this step (unless you want to crop out some of the image).

Open your photo in Photo Editor. At the bottom of the screen you will see a menu with a set of different functions on it. Scroll to the right until you see the “Crop” function and select it.

This will show a grid over the image – the area in this grid is the part of the image you are keeping. Drag the corner of the grid (marked 1) in a little to trim off some of the edge. After you’re happy with the amount trimmed select the blue tick (marked 2) to apply the change.

    Resizing The Image
If the image wouldn’t up upload because the file size was too large then you need to resize it.

Scroll the main menu along till you see the resize button and select it.

This will open the resize page. At the bottom is the scale bar (marked 1) move this towards the left until the resolution (marked 2) is around 3 megapixels. It doesn’t have to be perfect just around the 3 mark. Once you have the size set, apply it by selecting the blue tick (marked 3)

Does this app allow you to change quality of images to a smaller file size ? I always have issues uploading photos to forum taken on my phone. Think it is because the filesize is too big to upload.

I use an app called photo & picture resizer. About three taps and it's saved an image back into my gallery at a selected reduction, e.g 50% or 70%. I find that the 70% ones are a nice balance of easy to upload and good quality.

Thanks might have to try that. I just this minute used an online resizer that worked well and allowed me to attach a photo in a post.

I keep seeing this issue popping up and thought I'd share my way of doing it as well. This is only for if you're using your phone camera.

All messaging apps (whatsapp, facebook messenger etc) compress the image before sending it. I simply click the pics and send them to someone on whatsapp.

Now I have a compressed version of that image on my phone (in the whatsapp images sent folder). Now, if you're browsing the Vine on the phone, simply access your images from that folder.

Or, if you're like me on a laptop/desktop, just open whatsapp web on your laptop browser and download the compressed image on to your hard drive. You now have a small-sized image that you can attach on your post on the Vine.

I use Whatsapp but I'm sure this can be adapted to facebook messenger or any other messenger you use, if you use them.

There's lots of free photo resize software out there too.
You can resize up to 20 images in one go with this one - upload and resave in a couple of clicks.

Yeah, but Scarlet, I'm lazy! This way, I get to share any plant pics with my family (whether they want to see them or not), compress them, and get them on my laptop without looking for a USB cable to connect to my phone in one or two steps.

Like I said, image re-sizers are probably the best way to go but the method I use is this because in my head, it's less steps and less objects involved.

You don't need to connect your phone to your laptop?

                  Photos saved on your phone.
                  Click the link . https://tinypng.com
                  Click the download button.
Select photos from your library and click done.
                  App automatically compresses image.
Click download and save. Images appear in photos.
                  5 clicks - takes seconds

Upload photos from phone as normal.

I use what's app/messenger etc but not sure why any relative would want a photo of a row of gooseberries ......if you send yourself an email you can choose to compress image size and that's how lots of others manage to resize images.

Not with this method, I don't

Like I said, with whatsapp web, I send an image, and it shows up on the laptop browser chat window. I just download it from there. So I am essentially compressing and transferring in one step (well, 2 since I will then download it on the laptop from the browser).

I have a very understanding husband, mum, and sister. I just tell them I need the pics on my laptop and send away. They don't have autodownload on whatsapp files so if they don't wanna see them, they just don't download them.

If you don't want to send the pics to people, you could create a room with just yourself and send pics there instead.

I'm a bit lost here....I don't want the compressed photos to keep, so there's no need to link to a laptop. Compress photos, upload from phone. Job done.

Ah, right. Yeah, in that case, the image compression service would be the way to go.
