  • If you like hide and seek, your gonna love this....

I have come across this 'hobby' by accident...

Let me explain from the begining..... I work at a big outdoor place which is open to the public, whilst litter picking the other day a couple of us came across a Tupperware box full of bit's hidden in the bushes.

It nearly went in the bin, but we opened it and found a visitors book and little nick knacks. Also on the box was a website address called geocaching.com.

We put the box back in the same bush and i went to the website and found its a global hunting site. It appears there are maps and clues for the locations of these boxes and you have to leave a message and a trinket in the box, and a message in the relevant section on the website.

I've just looked up my area and found there is another box right near where i live, and i pass several to and from work. Also loads in Leicester city centre.

The idea is that nobody sees you going to these boxes, or they may be vandalised.

Try the site and see whats hiding in your area.

Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site

I bet some of you on here already take part in this.... common show yourselves.

Sunbeam put me on to this last week when we were planning a picnic with our children but the weather was dodgy at best last week. She suggested it as she's done it before. We spent the day doing it last Fri, although we stopped for a spot of den building in some woods with the kids halfway through.
We all had a great time, I took my dogs as well, they had a great time too.
In all we were out most of the day, didn't find the cache but plan on doing it again sometime.
I plan to get one of the GPS handsets of my own at sometime, because it would be a good way of exploring when we go on holdays too.

I used to do this many years ago across Dartmoor, no GPS then just good old fashioned OS grid references. thanks for the link, may well give this a go!

I can't believe it, apparently there's one in a trolley park in the middle of a shopping centre near me, stuck up with magnets.

          I've gotta find that one.

Gee, thanks for that Seasprout. I've had a quick look and there's some stuff near me in really interesting places I've meant to visit. Geocaching could be just the kick I need to get me there.
Husband fancies his map reading abilities (well cartography was part of his degree) so we could be out on the hunt. Thank you.

That's fab; there's one just past my lottie! And loads within a few miles [we get lots of tourists here so I suppose they bring them along for the ride and hide].

Thanks for that...brightened up this Sunday morning.

Its a funny thing isn't it.. today i've driven past two supposed hiding sites... had a good glance to see if anybody else was up to the same.

I reckon the use of a GPS would make the whole experience much better.

I confess I'm a geocacher too .If you are a member look me up under the user profile beefy 4605
It's a great way of getting out and seeing things that you would never think of looking at or for .
Then again we use billion dollar satelites to look for tupperware boxes - how mad is that

If anyone needs any help to get started re accounts etc drop me a pm and I'll try to help.

BTW some are as small as the point of your little finger so unless you are really lucky you wont find them.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Also forthose of you that have Nokia phones with built in GPS (N95 , N95 8gig or N82) you can download a programme to your phone to search for caches .
This will give you a taste for caching before you go and spend £70 -£300 on a dedicated GPS unit.
