  • Grow Your Own Ginger Challenge Part 2

There's been quite a bit of interest in joining me in my venture to grow ginger and I'm very happy for the company.

I thought I'd post a bit of help for those of us that haven't grown Ginger before, although there's lots of different sites on the internet that have good advice on them as well, it's fast approaching the start of the experiment just over 3 weeks away (January 1st, New Years Day) so you need to be on the look out for a good piece of ginger to grow, some that has little green bumps on it. (Photos at the bottom) Sadly not my photos.

    How to Grow Ginger

    Items Needed
    • Ginger Roots
    • Planting Container
    • Potting Soil
    • Fertilizers
    • Garden Trowels
Instructions (Growing Ginger in a Container)

    1. Take a planting container that has a diameter of around 14 inches and is 12 inches deep. At the same time, it should have a good drainage system.

    2. Soak the tubers in warm water and leave overnight.

    3. Fill the container with potting soil, which has been enriched beforehand, with plenty of compost.

    4. In the morning, set the tubers in the pot, just below the soil surface. Make sure to space them evenly and have the buds facing up.

    5. Place the container indoors at a place that has good light. In the initial days following planting, water the container lightly.

    6. As soon as you see the growth starting, water the plant more heavily. In the winter season, plants go dormant. So, you need to keep them dry.

7.Always keep the plant shielded from high winds. It will take around 10 to 12 months for the plant to reach maturity and grow to a height of 2 to 4 feet.

All thats left for me to say is Good Luck and don't forget your photos.

Have we all got our ginger and ready for planting on New Years day? Not long now :-)

I bought three pieces, need to check them to see if they have sprouted yet?

Whoops. I was planning to join in and when I saw some ginger with tiny sprouts I bought some in readiness. I cut a few fingers off and put them in compost in my cold lobby and promptly forgot about them. Just has a look at them and although the sprouts have disappeared there appears to be some fine root system developing underneath. Should I scrap this lot and start again.

I had a piece with a really good shoot, but I've just checked and it has withered & died.

Right, I have checked all three of my pieces of ginger and none of them have sprouted

I have 3 plans of action, hopefully one of them will work

                  1. I am going to go to the shop tomorrow and see if I can find a piece with a sprout to buy and grow.

                  2. I am going to plant one of my existing pieces without a sprout and see if planting it stimulates some growth.

                  3. I have sliced the end off one of my existing pieces to expose fresh flesh and I have suspended it in a jar of water so that the fresh end is in contact with the water in the hope it might root or sprout. Once sprouted, sorry that should be if it sprouts I will plant it.

Good Luck Grapes - I think we might need it

Have just managed to fill some pots with very cold compost:-it`s been too frozen for the last 3 weeks, so have brought it indoors & will plant it tomorrow.

Ooh BM your's is really advanced! I planted a bit in a pot on 9 January, it didn't have any green shoot but the buds looked promising. Shoved it in a heated propagator to try to get it started, as yet nothing, but I can wait.

                          Ginger query

Hopefully someone can tell me how to get my newly bought piece of ginger from the supermarket to 'sprout' please?

i want to take part in the ginger challenge but without a sprout i dont think i can!

is there a way i can do something to it to make it sprout so i can plant it and get on with the challenge?

                          thanks

I've merged this with the actual ginger thread; as this would be the best place for advice on getting them to root...I found a piece of fresh ginger in my fridge the other day so I'll be watching any responses [and chopping a piece off and putting into compost in the meantime].
