Ok - give a little before you set down the challenge!!!

When are you planning on doing it and what are you planning on doing?

Sorry zazen,
I was thinking about starting my ginger of inside new years day, that way anyone who would like to join in has plenty of time to prepare, I've said inside because the ginger hates frost plus it gives the ginger time to put it's roots down before it's plant on to it's permanent position, given you don't want to keep it in the pot that is, we can put photo's of our plant's on here so we can see how well each other are doing, I used the word "Challenge" because for me it will be a challenge, anything new usually is. There's no prize at the end, it's just to see if like minded grape's would like to join in.

OK - New Years Day it is then, must remember to buy a root around Christmas time. I will be starting mine off in my conservatory, in a good old flower bucket I think god knows I've got plenty of them, unless anyone has any better ideas that is?

I'm in. You know I love posting pictures of stuff I'm doing/have done on here. This gives me another excuse!

Are you buying a root from a regular greengrocer, a supermarket or an Asian store?
What are you going to do to start it off; just chop a bit off and put it in regular compost? Or put the whole root in? Peat free or not? Added well rotted manure or not? Don't forget as it's roots that you want you might want to start it off on the same day as the onion trial which is probably a few days earlier than New Year's day [although I haven't checked, it's just a guess].

Just a few thoughts - I've done trials before and these are the sort of things people will ask

If you started a new thread on the day, with how you are doing it and photos; we can stick it and see who else wants to join in.

God, I just love the Vine! Andrea is soo wise - and I'm up for the challenge too. It almost makes me look forward to (sshh) ...that time of year.

Yup, I thought it might be nice to grow something inside, that didn't involve going outside in the winter weather to check on it.
With regard to what grapes sow there's ginger in (Peat free or not...etc) its up to the individual, if they want to buy from a specialist or if they want to stick a bit of ginger in from supermarket, it's up to the grape to decide...
Me, I'm using shop bought ginger, peat free with a little bit of sand mixed in, in a 12" round terracotta pot, in my kitchen to start of with, I'm probably going to crash n burn, but what the hell, I think it'll be fun.

If anyone else has any ideas or advice to add..please feel free to say, nothing's written in stone.

I buy my ginger from the local greengrocer so I'll chop a bit off it before putting the rest of it in the freezer like I usually do.
