  • Chickpeas

    Hi there

Can anyone tell me if you can grow these in the UK please? They are just about one of my favourite things so would love to have a go if you can! Im very new to this, so its all questions, I'm afraid!

You can, but they need warmth and the yields are low. Consider them a novelty crop.

I grew them last year. Pretty plants which grew well, but no crop so a bit of a waste of time IMO. I'm told they make a good green manure though!

I've tried growing them twice, they grew well, and made two to a pod tiny peas, bright green and peanutty tasting, but fiddly to open, fed the whole plants to the chickens, they adored them! Before any peas ripened enough to dry the plants just lay down and started to die. Probably too damp here.

They're delicious, I wish I could grow chickpeas.
They are widely grown in tropical countries. Plants only succeed outdoors in Britain in hot summers; they often fail in mild moist maritime climates (like the UK) because the seedpods are hairy and this holds moisture. The moisture then encourages fungal growth and the seed usually rots before it is fully mature

We've also tried them with no success but were also told they make a good green manure so almost nothing lost!
