  • moving asparagus

Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to move asparagus?
I'd love to grow it, but we might not be in our place for very much longer, and it's a bit of an investment.
I can always make sure that it gets moved at a time when it it optimal to do so if that makes any difference.

The roots grow exceptionally huge after a few years ( we're talking of 10 feet plus deep here folks!!!!)

I moved some after 2 yrs and they had been planted as 2 yr olds- and the root ball was a good 2ft plus ball.
If I recall of the 4 which were moved 3 survived
Any longer and you'd be cutting the rootball.
Maybe worth starting them off in pots????

(I'm sure you'd be OK up to 2 yrs from my experience ie 4yr old plants)

Can they be kept in pots for the long term is the roots go so deep. I have a patio so I bought 1 year old crowns and they are in pots and thriving, I would like to keep them in pots even if they need to be much larger.

GG - No idea to be honest- but if well watered and fed, I don't see why not.
There are a few other peeps on here growing them in pots, but I've no idea how old their plants are.( I think they live up until about 20 years???)

I've moved 2-3 year old asparagus, and half the plants survived.
No, you can't get a productive crop from containers, they need open ground and a permanent bed.

My back garden is completely paved hence the pots so I think i'll dot them in the flower beds at the front, it's only 3 plants so wont be obvious! When is the best time to transfer them from the pot?

Just after you have cut them back for the winter.

You do know that they grow up to about 5 ft????

You should stop taking the spears at about 21st June- (midsummers day)..and then leave the rest to grow to full height to feed the roots..then you get more spears the following year.
Will your front border cope with that height??????
