    Hi all,
Wondering has anybody grown strawberries from seed and if so what success did you have.
Also sowed rhuberb from seed and am asking the same question.

I have Bramble, they were a free packet with a mag about 2 or 3 years ago, nurtured them to fruiting size and the gourgeous red fruits were orrible

A lot of the seed ones are Alpine strawbs and only give you small fruits late in autumn and are nice. Personally I wouldn't bother with this again and just buy some plants of some well known varieties.

        Hi Nick,
Thanks for replying. I bought this pack of seed in Spain in the autumn. Not much directions as most of its in spanish. The picture on the packet looks delicious, big juicy strawberries BUT as we all know, never judge the book by the cover. Anyway they're already sown, so I will w3ait and see what results i get.
        regards, Bramble.

          Hi Poultrychat,
Thanks for that info. I was told rhuberb is very hard to germinate so i sowed 20 seed just to be on the sure.l Am now hoping they all dont germinate as i don,t have room for them all and can,t imagine what i can do with all that lot (except make rhuberb wine)

            Hi Bramble
Why stick to wine - there's Andrewo's recipe for rhubarb schnapps - join the rest of us in making this - I think everyone who has read his recipe has decided that it is truly worthwhile.

Strawberries from seed....hmmmmm. I would always go with runners bought from a reputable firm because of the wealth of variety, you also get crops faster and new plants even quicker. Seed is hit and miss.

I bet all your Rhubarb germinates cos you only want a bit

I'll await with interest the Straws Bramble, I don't think I did anything special when I sowed mine & as your are a foreign variety (possibly) you may be OK.

                      growing rhuberb

                      Hi Nick,
With my luck it will germinate. I don't have a hugh ammount of space so will definitely make schnapps, but my mother lives facing a very busy cemetary and I can just see myself sitting there with a little table selling rhuberb by the bunch. Not bad for about a quarter packet of seed.

Hi, I have sown a packet of alpine strawberries last spring, they fruited last summer and were still going strongly in November (until the frosts). It was my daughter's favourite thing to pick them for her morning snack while we were playing outside, (she was only 1 1/2 then and trying to get her to understand that she should only eat the red berries was fun! ! and the few (red ones) she shared with me were really sweet). I don't know about growing bigger varieties though, I always get them as runners.
