  • Sudden death

One of our chucks a light sussex suddenly stopped laying two weeks ago but seemed ok in herself and as she had recently moulted we thought she was just resting anyway yesterday I noticed she had the runs and was looking a little sorry for herself she has always had a messy bottom yet had lost a little wieght but having kept chucks for a number of years again I thought nothing of it and decided to monitor her with the idea of a visit to the vet if she was no better today.

I went to check her when I got up this afternoon and found her dead in the run? Our Black Rock is absolutly fine with no sign of illness boh birds are or where just 2 years old so this death is totally unexpected.

I have spent the last few hours bleeching and scrubbing the chuck house and run our Black rock looks totally lost which has prompted me to look at 3 POL shaver warrens. I was looking to get more chuks anyway but was waiting to build a bigger chuck house the one I have at the moment will take 4 birds but space equals happy birds. will build a new chuck house this weekend..

Anyway I will be monitoring our remaining chuck and am at a loss as to this sudden death??
Today I will be mainly growing Vegetables.

Tonight The bloody slugs & snails will eat them!

We just lost one to the same symptoms. Farm thinks it was egg peritonitis, start laying yolks inside - hence no eggs. At least it was quick and it's not contagious! Bought two more but oldest chicken has been vicious, so separated again till gets a bit bigger! Any tips merging new flock?
