I'm looking at these as a way of not being woken up at daybreak in the summer by my feathery friends having no respect for my work/sleep patterns. Has anyone used these, are they any good?

Interesting link BB, but I have enough diy.projects on the go at the moment. I'm going with the purchase option, however I'm not sure whether one will be enough. The feed trough area looks quite small so I may need at least two feeders for13 chickens?

Probably the best chook related purchase i have made (at BB's recommendation).
With 4 chooks free ranging all day, every day, a full bag lasts me weeks. If yours are penned in and this is their only source of food i can imagine you might want two. As you say, the area for them to actually get in and have a feed is only big enough for 2-3 birds at a time.
The link Scarlet put up above has a short discussion on them starting on page 5...

Interesting point Floyd, I'm not sure what the ratio of birds to feeders is (or even if there is one), yes the feed area is quite small & logic would say get several for the number of hens you have, but I would be tempted to just get one & see what happens.
Once they learn that they have free access to however much food they want, I think they will happily eat smaller amounts randomly through the during the day, rather than all going to a feed bowl at whatever time "dinner is served".He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame
