  • Neem oil

I wondered if anyone here has used Neem oil to deal with aphid attacks? My two honeysuckles get horribly afflicted at this time of year and I try not to use chemicals so I thought it was worth a shot. I am naturally very cynical so imagine my amazement when this stuff worked.
I learnt about it on youtube and just followed what they said to do. I duly sprayed and then waited. Two days later and all the aphids have gone and the honeysuckles have grown a bit to!

We have used it a fair bit in the garden. It is great for powdery mildew on courgettes etc, and can be used to help combat all sorts of insects.

We even brush it through the dogs' coats to help keep nasties away from them

Nope. I added a teaspoonful to 2 litres of water which is probably a bit stronger than is necessary. I added a drop of washing up liquid to help the solution adhere to the leaves and not just roll off.
I'm trying it out on one of my camellias which has a fungal problem. Fingers crossed

I read recently on the DEFRA site that it's currently illegal to use neem on edibles in the UK, sorry I don't have a link.

I learnt about the wonders of neem oil when i was working in india. I still use it on my skin as a treatment and mixed in water as a mouth wash. The indians have known its properties for many hundreds of years. I wouldnt be without it.

We mix it with olive oil at 10% neem to olive and use it to stop mosquito bites, spray plants with neem in water, water pots with it, put it in dog shampoo to kill fleas/ringworm/mange.....put it on dogs collar to scare fleas away....

                We use loads of it!

I just thought I would update on the camellia which had a fungal problem. Well, the neem oil worked a treat. I picked off the brown splotched leaves and all new shiny ones soon appeared.

A tip on using neem oil to spray on bug infested plants. Put the neem oil first to the water and then add enough soap to create an emulsion otherwise the oil will just sit on the surface. I usually mix it in a glass jug first then pour into the sprayer and top up with water. You will know if it is an emulsion mix as it will go evenly cloudy.
Neem oil will clog up the nozzle of your sprayer so make sure you clean the nozzle with a hot soapy mix ready for use next time.
