  • Cucumber leaves going yellow

    Please can anyone help.
All the leaves on my cucumber plants are starting to go yellow and there is a very fine cobweb covering the leaves. They have been good up to two days ago with plenty of cucumbers.

Its sounds like red spider mite.

You can see the very fine cobwebs on the edges of this leaf. They tend to be about in hot weather.

My leaves also turned yellow so I reduced the amount I was watering them and cut the yellow leaves off. They have been much heathier since.

As for the red spider mite - I had an infestation last summer and someone told me to dilute ***** fluid in a spray bottle and spray all the corners and base of the greenhouse which I did and I also do it regularly through the growing season being careful not to spash it my my plants.

Touch wood I havent seen any this year!

Oh thats interesting, my cuke leaves have been very yellow but I assumed I was under-watering rather than over-watering.

I've had about 3-4 cukes now from my plant but on two occasions there was a small bitter piece - not the whole thing - but a section. What causes the bitterness?

I'm not altogether happy about spraying ***** about in my greenhouse, are there any more good cures?

Get the hose out every day and give the plants a proper misting. Red spider mite thrive in dry conditions, that should keep on top of them. Occasionaly i will miss watering the plants but instead give the inside of my polytunnel and greenhouse a good dousing in all the nook and crannies to dislodge any nasties lurking.

Cucumbers really hate to overwatered, so it could have been that, which then lead to a root problem and a loss of certain nutrients. As you see the plants in my picture has more a dry tissue type look, because the spiders sucked all the goodness out of them.
If yours is more just of a yellowing then as I said it could be a deficency.
Keep them moist by spraying with a hose in hot weather, this will also keep spider at bay, like has been said. Then just cut down on the watering.

Saying all that I am guessing here because i havent seen your plant.

I had a wilting cucumber a few weeks ago, which was the start of a root problem, I put a mound of earth at the bottom of the stem to encourage new root growth and did what I sugested above.
It was over 30 degrees yesterday and my cucumber is fine again now.
