  • Which greenhouse shall i buy?

    Hi all,

Got a bit of a dilema with the greenhouse front. I have an allotment and my 1st initial plan was to build one out of wood and polythene there. I was also going to have one at home for raising seedlings wanting to spend no more than £200. I've been given a base for a 6x8 greenhouse also.

Has anyone seen any good deals lately? Preferably after a pollycarbonate one.

My other option was to scrap the idea of building one and buy a cheap tunnel off ebay (£84.99 for 3.5mx2m) for the allotment. I know these don't last well but it could be a short term replacement and i could use the frame to build a tunnel after the plastic it comes with has had it. I would also buy some for home the cheapo 5 tier plastic thingy's for bringing on seedlings, but worried that these wont keep enough heat for the chilli's and toms currently on my windowsill in the coming months.
Doe's this sound like a plan or am i better spending a bit more and getting a proper one?
An advantage of getting a proper one would be that i can get electricity to it for cheap.

    Any help greatly appreciated

Lots of people will suggest having a look on freecycle for a greenhouse - personally I've never had much success with it, but there are plenty that have.

I'd say go for the biggest you can get away with - you'll fill it before you know it.

I have a little mini polycarb one, but I reckon glass would be better.

Good luck finding what you need.

Well, I know they get a slating by others (because the insructions are not brilliant for putting it together) but I love my Norfolk Greenhouses. I have 2, one at home, a 6'x4', and one on the lottie 6'x12'. I have their Standard type ones, which are a proper frame, covered with rolls of plastic that are anchored in trenches like polytunnels, or paving slabs round the sides. My lotties one is trenched, the home one is slabs. Neither of them have budged an inch in 2 years despite the lottie one being in an exposed postion. The bigger ones have a rear window which I have managed to rig up an automatic opener onto (with some modifications).
Although the instructions are rubbish, my DIYphobic OH managed to erect both of ours in one day, cover it the next.

Have a look and see what you think. The polycarbonate ones (Ultimate) they do have a reputation for losing their glazing when it's windy, if you get one of those, you need to silicone in the glazing The 6'x4' one is the Budget one.

Our Palram 6 x 8 worked well last season. The instructions supplied are vague to say the least. It took a day and a half to put up first time. We moved it from the allotment and the second time we put it up (in the garden) it only took 2 hrs. We covered ours in netting last year as the lotty we've got is very exposed and the high winds of last year did no-one any favours, especially the owners of glasshouses - at least we could just pick up our panels and shove them back in

          This is mine:

The Eco Life Morland Road Allotments Plot 79 Greenhouse Up At Last!

From B&Q. Not a bad price and very good. I'd normally steer clear of anything flatpacked from garden centres. I did have a few trips back to collect missing parts but oh well!

It was on special offer when I bought it. Might be worth checking your local and seeing if they have anything.

I've just purchased a B&Q 6x6ft green aluminium GH with horticultural glass upon the advice of the users of the Grapevine, and with the exception of constructing the base (2hrs) it too me and my OH about 4hrs to erect it from start to finish. The instructions were very clear, and when we opened the box we found another box insided labelled up as a Gardman GH! What a joy to behold.

Upon first impressions, I'd recommend a B&Q GH!!

I brought the Palram 6 x 8 from b & Q But had to take it back and swap it yesterday and luckily they had one left. The first one i brought the base didn't have holes in the base to connect it together but new one has. Half way up and no missing parts yet famous last words lol. Think it's a strong coffee the round 2 just wish the weather would bighten up.

Thanx for some excellent advice peeps
