    transporting a greenhouse

    hiya newbie here has any one had experiences transporting greenhouse glass without it getting broken.im picking up my new freebie greenhouse this saturday but im not sure how to pack glass properly ect,its all being loaded into a transit van and the longer parts on the roof rack as they are 12 foot.any tips will great as this is my first decent greenhouse as my starter one is made of plastic with a green frame tho its lasting very well for a cheapie. cheers )

    When I've bought new greenhouse glass its been separated by paper but that would take an age for a complete greenhouse. Glass is very heavy and I could only carry a few panes at a time so I would try to pile the panes, flat, on top of each other, but crosswise, every few panes, so that you can easily separate them to carry in manageable loads. Watch out for jagged edges!

      make sure you have a CLEaN perfectly flat stable surface to stack the glass on, also make sure each piece is clean and DRY, I always like to seperate each sheet with brown paper or similar-anyone who has ever tried seperating damp sheets of glass will tell you its an absolute b*****d! in some cases nigh on impossible.
      Good luck with your new greenhose, it will be well worth the effort

        I made the mistake once of loading glass into my boot where I have a liner with a raised edge. 14 panes with a corner broken off. hard lesson. Only had to replace a few though as I was able to cut them down but won't do that again.

            From experience last year, place a sheet of paper between each pane as it will be a pain if you dont, old blankets, curtains etc for padding. Good luck with moving it. Most of all dont rush it.

              Can't give you any advice but I've remembered this tread started by Mrs Dobby about how she transported her greenhouse:-

              I was lucky mine came from next doors so it was a matter of taking the glass out and lifting the frame over a 5ft wall.

                From experience to transport glass is to stand the glass on edge the same way that the glass companys do it is a lot safer way to and make sure it is not loose make sure it can not fall over .

                  Get two piece's of timber and lay them on the floor of the tranny far enough apart to support the pane's of glass. If the floor of the tranny isnt lined make sure they are deeper that the ridges in the floor. Take a further two piece's of timber and set them the same distance apart up the side of the tranny to support the glass do not lean it against the bare side of the tranny. The idea being the the glass touches only wood.
                  Take plenty of newspaper, stand a sheet of glass on edge onto the supports making sure its close to vertical, then a sheet of newspaper then next pane of glass and do it all over again. Finally tie it off so that it is immoveable

                  Don't know how much glass you will be transporting but remember it can be very heavy. If there is a lot split the load in two and have half each side of the van to equal the load.

                    I've transport greenhouse glass twice in 12 months in my car and not broken any pains at all

                    First time it all went in the boot, laid on some polystyrene.

                    Second time I already had somethings in the boot so half went in the boot laid on a dust sheet the the rest stood up in the footwells of the back seats covered with a dust sheet and is now sat in lottie shed waiting for spring to arrive

                      Here's mine on the move...managed to get it home with just one pane broken...



                      and here is the frame all put nicely together in it's new home....however, I have yet to re glaze it ....so "watch this space" !!!!

                      I think this might be my greenhouse ( very amateur) and other trivia blog page!!! Do feel free to drop in !

                          snap lol mine traveled by roof rack as it was 12 foot long and didnt fit in the transit van lol
