  • The 2015 One to Five a Week Challenge!

I've set myself a little challenge for next year and wondered whether anyone else would like to join me!!

The Challenge is in 2 parts:-

    1. to sow or plant 5 different things each week;

    2. to eat 5 different things that you have grown each week (or made from something you've grown).

Ideally it would be something every day but you are allowed 2 days off a week

I'm committing myself to this now, so that I can be sure that there will be something to pick in January - so plan ahead - even if its by freezing or preserving your current harvest.

Also, if you want to start now, that's fine. Just post on here each week, what you've sown and eaten.

    Oooh! That's a difficult one

Not the eating 5 different things, with the freezer that's fairly easy - but the sowing/planting 5 different things a week.
I'll have a think about that one first............ before I set myself up to fail

That's 260 different plants!!! I don't have the space for that!!!

Does a different variety of the same plant count as one or two?

Edit: can you sow 10 things one week and then have a week off?

The proof of the growing is in the eating.
      Leave Rotten Fruit.
      Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
      Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

Counts as 2 - so 5 different tomatoes = 5. There, its not so difficult after all, Thelma

Up to you and your conscience

i could probably do that 'on average', but i'd rather plant 24 cauliflowers in one go than spread them out over a number of weeks ....

            That's the problem, isn't it.

I plant all the winter brassicas in one go as well.

I could sow 5 different winter salads today - but then there's no need to sow anything else for weeks - make that months.

Some seasons would be much easier than others as well......

I'm intending to make more succession sowings than I do now - every week a pinch of salad leaves, radish, carrots........that sort of thing.

O ye of little faith It'll be a doddle
One thing to make it easier - if you sow something in a module and plant it out a few weeks later, that counts as an action in both weeks..................Does that make sense? Don't answer, please.

I've only got a quarter plot. My love of winter squash wouldn't allow it. I love the idea though.

What about sprouting seeds on the windowsill, or pea shoots in a punnet? You can sow cress every week and eat it before the next week.
I think you're all making excuses...............
