  • Advice on growing melons

    Hi all,

I have 2 melon plants that I bought as tiny seedlings from the garden centre. They are now going great guns in Morrisons Buckets on my window cill. There eventual home will be in my cheapo ebay polytunnel although was thinking I'd wait until after the last frost to move them. My questions is they are already have a few flowers - should I just leave them to their own devices as they look quite happy? Or should I pinch the flowers out until they go outside? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'd be tempted to get personal with a paintbrush. Are they male and female flowers? Or just the one gender? Female flowers have a tiny-mini melon bulge behind them.

Hi, all the flowers are the same and looking at them I suspect they are all males (cant see any little melons, assume the female ones would be a little like female courgette flowers?) They are sweetheart Melons by the way.

hey, am a novice with melons but i hope this helps, some varieties like cucumbers flower male for a time and then flower female after, if its on your window cill and its flowering now i would be temped to pinch out the males to try and delay the plant marturing too fast... when planted in the poly tunnel, they like a sunny position and lots of water... saying that.... if the green growth at the moment is massive compared to the root growth it might be worth taking it outside during the day to reduce its growth rate and to let the roots catch up........

        i hope this makes sense..

Hi, Thanks for the advice - its all greatfully received! I started hardening them off today by putting them outside for a bit.
