  • BBC2 Gardening Series

    Hi all,

I’m contacting you from Silver River Productions, a TV company producing a new primetime Gardening Programme for BBC2.

The programme will be an exciting and stimulating series which will reveal all the wonderful possibilities that can be unlocked from one patch of earth. From vegetables to fruits and flowers, this programme will illustrate that gardens aren’t just for sitting in!

We are looking for pairs of contestants who have the skills and the dedication to compete to be the nation's best kitchen gardener. Someone who can cultivate the perfect carrot, make their green tomatoes into award winning chutney and turn their dahlias and sweet peas into floral arrangements fit for a Queen.

We would like to hear from people who believe they have the skills to compete and are interested in featuring in our series. We would be grateful if you could spread the word in newsletters, e-mail outs, social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, or of course in person to friends and family.

It couldn’t be easier to apply; all you need to do is email grow@silverriver.tv for an application form. The dead line is the 8th March so please get in touch as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance for your help, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
    Kind Regards

    Hi

Could you just confirm whether the filming will all be done in one place or whether you are expecting people to garden in their own areas?

What time of year are you planning on filming, and what's the lead in time to filming?

Is there a budget set or are people financing the growing themselves?

Why not ask some people to show how they garden to educate and encourage new gardeners? Why does it have to be a competition/ reality show? This shows a real lack of understanding of why most people garden. Gardening is not a competitive sport. A few people grow for village shows but I'm sure they are the minority. A real missed opportunity - how disappointing. Sums up the BBCs lack of interest in real gardening. Won't be volunteering or watching.

I've been trying to find out the answers to the above for weeks!

Interesting that nobody seems to know or be able to comment...surely that's the sort of detail that people would want to know? I would apply if it was up here as I know nothing about growing in London. I suspect they only want London people really...

I imagine the format is to boost ratings and reach the largest possible audience. Like Masterchef turning cooking into a competition. It entertainment as well as educational. Edutainment I believe they call it. I suppose there is something to be said for it if ultimately it turns people on to gardening. There's always gadeners world for those of us who really love gardening any way.

I think you're being a bit presumptuous, and a bit negative, if I may say so.

I think AberdeenPlotter would disagree with you.

I just looked at Silver River's website: " we’ve had series on the BBC, Channel 4, Sky 1, and Five featuring top talent that includes Kevin McCloud, James Wong, Jeremy Paxman, Kevin McKidd, Michelle Ryan, Giles Coren and Sue Perkins to name but a few "

Not much Celebrity Dancing in the Jungle there.

Remember the last gardening competition on the BBC, Gardener of the Year? Let's hope that's not the benchmark.
You have also quoted me out of context, I did say people grow for competition, and I applaud their contribution to all our knowledge of how to grow quality produce. However for most growers, and I admit I have no empirical evidence to support this, competition is not
why they grow. I wait to be proved wrong. Sorry if you find my views negative but that's what I think.

Seems a natural progression from Cooking shows -> Great British Bake Off.

It might not be the reason why people grow, but my father competes with all the allotmenteers around him to produce the first, the best, the biggest, the brightest. He's never entered a competition in his life for gardening, but takes great pride in knowing that he is further on than those around him down the plot.

You can do both Wendy, you can be competitive and enjoy gardening just for the pleasure of it.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

There's a follow on to that but I dare not put it here

But we have that: Gardener's World.

like it or not, gardening is a minority interest (on telly). Gardeners tend to be out there, gardening, not indoors watching the telly. It's a conundrum.
