  • Can you cut and grow Iceberg Lettuce?

Hi. I read that Iceberg is Webbs Lettuce - supposed to be difficult to grow. But can you grow it as a cut and grow? Or any suggestions for a crispy lettuce you can cut and grow. I'm not a big fan of iceberg, but it's the only lettuce bf likes - its the crispiness, so sure I could tempt him with another as long as crispy!
    thanks

I've got a feeling you can use leaves from Cos lettuce as cut and grow.

Cut-and-come-again lettuce is the looseleaf kind.
A hearting lettuce just won't ever heart up if you keep pulling leaves off.

Try something like sherwood (a cos type) which is nice and crunchy but unfortunately doesn't have the high water content that iceberg have and a lot of people like.

I'm not sure about iceberg but I grow little gem and when I cut then I leave about an inch behind and get another crop of little lettuces that grow on the stump. I usually pick these quite small so I've no idea how big they would grow if I left them.

That sounds like the perfect solution to OP's question.
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

thanks guys - already growing little gem - will have a look at sherwood - just not keen to give up so much space to iceberg, when so much other lovely stuff I could put in its place

Elsie, I grow iceberg and don't find it difficult. No, it's not cut and grow but hearts up. However, if you cut the hearted lettuce and leave the stump, it puts out new leaves which don't heart up and you can cut useful amounts from them. I'd give them a try.
