  • Cheap crop netting for your Brassicas

    Hi everyone

You are all going to think I'm a right cheap-skate but if you can do it cheaply, then why not.

When I first started I was told by my neighbors on the allotment that I MUST net my Brassicas or the pigeons will have them before I've even locked the gate on my way out. Another plotter who started the same time as me didn't bother because it was getting dark when he put his cabbages in and was going to net them in the morning, only to find stumps when he came back.

When I looked at the price of netting I was gobsmacked how expensive it was until, my partner pointed out some in a shop we were walking around and I bought a pack just to see if it would do.

    Here is the pack:

You can get this netting from the 99p store or the Pound shops, I've noticed they all seem to stock it. When I went back to the 99p shop and bought 10 I also got one free so it was even cheaper.

Now I hear you all saying 'its not big enough' but here's the clever bit. The sides of the netting are very close weave compared to the rest which gives the edges strength but also allows it to be joined together. So what I did was join it using a hot glue gun, in fact I joined four of them to get a net 8m x 4m which was ample for what I needed and only cost £3.96 to make. The hot glue doesn't dissolve in water so is weather proof (you can pick one up for a tenner from Screwfix if you haven't got one), or you could use something like fishing line and stitch it together but the hot glue method is the easiest.

Mine has lasted for two years and it's going to see out its third year and is still going strong, looks like my forage to empty the 99p shop of the netting wasn't needed as I still have 15 of the packs lol.

That looks pretty decent for keeping the pigeons off.

Personally I use scaffolding debris netting, the 3 metre wide stuff covers a bed nicely and it's fine enough to keep the butterflies off as well as the pigeons.

That's what I use as well, as the cabbage whites can fold their wings and get through the larger holes in your type of netting

Is the netting really that expensive. Its pence over here. I am all in for doing things cheaply if you can why not
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Forgot to mention, scaffold netting works out at 20p to 25p a square metre, so for a 50 metre roll of 3 metre wide netting expect to pay £30 to £35.

I now use Wilco's own brand pond netting it has smaller holes than the garden netting. I trailed it one cage last year and had no caterpillar damage, needless to say all cages now are covered with it.

I too use finer netting as it keeps out insects / butterflies as well as birds. Wasn't cheep to buy but has lasted several years already and meant I've been able to enjoy my veggies

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I too have seen this! It's amazing how they squeeze through, I went down to 7mm squares in the same netting, they don't make it through that!

With this netting from the 99p shop I've not had any caterpillar damage in the two years I've used it, seen plenty of them cabbage whites bouncing off it trying to get at the stuff.

Now if only the netting would stop the pesky slugs and snails getting at them I'd be a happy bunny.

Went down the plot this afternoon, looks like I now have a mole that's taken a shine to my plot ..... now where's the dynamite.

Yes I think the Cabbage Whites have more sense than you might think.
I had some netting up and it had a hole. They managed to get in and also knew how to get out again !

dynamite should sort slugs as well, possibly cats and other unwelcome urchins.
