  • Chitting Onion Sets?????

As I believe I've said before I don't watch much T.V, but last night, whilst trawling for a weather forecast, I watched the local news and it seems they're running a series with one of the presenters who has taken on an allotment. They were talking about chitting onion sets. I've never heard of this before and I've certainly never done it. Have I missed something that was so basic no-one bothered to mention it? Or have they got the wrong end of the stick?........ it wouldn't be the first time.

If the onion sets are showing green it's best to get them in the light though or else you'll get straggly tops! You could also pot them up into small pots for planting out later. Not exactly chitting, just exposing to light!

I've got some in the greenhouse in modules to get a good root system on before I plant them out. Is that what they mean? I wouldn't have called it chitting though.

Nope, they were putting them in seed trays - without compost - and exposing them to the light as you would potatoes. I thought I was going mad, but pleased - and not entirely surprised - that it's them.

The guy with the plot next to ours puts his shallots in a tray with about1" compost underneath to encourage root growth so when they're finally planted out, they are less likely to be pulled out by birds. Also with their small green shoots and rot system, they've got a bit of a head start!
(I've never seen him do anything like that with onions though...I think he grows those from seed)

Our shallots are done that way now- and they come on a treat!

I can understand the logic in that, Nicos. But these were just tipped from their bag into an empty plastic seed tray to 'chit'. Weird.

They're just wrong then if they let it sprout without soil.

If you let the onion set sprout a top growth without it being in soil to produce roots then all it'll do will waste all the stored up energy in the set.

If you want to start them off early as said above just put a sett in either a single pot or module WITH SOIL though !!
