  • Double Decker Garlic?!

I harvested my garlic today and I'm really pleased with the Iberian I planted, less so with the Lautrec but I've never seen this before!

A few of my Iberian seem to have a second bulb trying to form part way up the stem!

This pic for size guide, sadly I knocked the 10p off for the second photo but didn't notice at the time!

Now if I could get it all to do this I'd be well chuffed!

Did they send up a flower spike at all? Cos it looks to me as if the flower head has developed inside the stem - the little "cloves" you can see are garlic bulbils.

Looks like one of my experiments that actually worked I assume they are tiny bulbils that can be planted out. I'm jealous!!

These one's are a softneck variety and didn't send up any flower spikes at all.

Last year I had a few bulbils (love that word!) on my elephant garlic last year but these were all at the bottom, off of the main bulb.

If I'd conceived of such an experiment I'd be very proud!

I was thinking I'd plant them out next year VC, but some of them are sprouting already!

Probably a bit early for them to be planted out properly but I think I'll stick them in a pot and leave them somewhere sheltered and keep an eye on them!

I think what you see is the "Scape". It looks like a tiny bulb followed by a curly green "pig's tail". I was told to cut off this scape as it would take away from the bulb. The good thing is that the scape is edible and is delicious raw chopped in salad or added to a stir fry.

Mine often do this, here's a link to the thread I posted back in 2010. Don't think they were hard necks though.

Mine did this too last year. I wondered if it was related to depth of planting or something, they they decided to form a new bulb nearer the surface? Didn't seem to affect them at all.

Garlic cloves growing part way up the stem

I pulled my garlic up today, some of them have little cloves growing partway up the stem.
Does anyone know if these can be eaten or are they best planted for next years crop?

If yes, I'm saving them for next year! : )

You can eat them or re-plant. Not sure if they'd produce a decent size bulb though, I usually just eat them.

I got lots like that,I put it down to damage to the stem due to allium leaf miner attack but that is just a surmise not a scientific fact

Mine did this last year and again this year, same variety both times, Albigensian perhaps? We don't get Allium Leaf Miner, so definitely not caused by that. We just eat them, count it as an added bonus crop
