  • Early Christmas Tatties?

I was really worried about my Christmas tatties as the foliage had all died away and I never did spray them with anything. Anyway ......... I decided to dig up a pot yesterday just to see what was happening and hey presto ! a fair crop of reasonably sized new potatoes. Absolutely delicious. Early Christmas present! Just hope I can keep the last three pots ticking over until the big day.

Also dug up a few carrots yesterday from my earthed up trench and they are keeping quite nicely, but the sprouts are dismal. I'll be lucky if I'm eating the tops! Perhaps it has been too mild so far - 11 degrees yesterday.

How are others Christmas tatties doing?

I only have one pot and the foliage died back on that, so I shall be interested to see whether there are any pots in there. Since it's my only pot, I shall leave it until nearly Christmas to investigate.
    My sprouts are non-existent!

I've just earthed up my Christmas spuds in the potato barrel, they seem to be doing o.k. I earthed them up a couple of weeks ago & when I looked today there were 2 leafy stems which had shot up about a foot & 1 smaller one. I put 5 potatoes in originally (cornish ones from supermarket) so I think maybe a couple of them didn't sprout at all but it looks promising for the others. Not siure if they'll be ready for Christmas though as they took ages to get going originally & I've covered the tub with a fleece bag to help keep the frost off them but not been troubled by any yet! Hope you enjoyed your tatties Jennie, the others should be o.k. left in the pots as long as they don't get too frosted, I'll be joining you with the 'sprout tops' meal as mine are tiny & rubbish too!

Glad to hear your potatoes doing OK Jennie despite the lack of foliage. Mine are the same. I planted 4 buckets which started off great but then lost the foliage I thought they had drowned and was going to empty them out when I found wee potatoes. I've left them alone so just hoping something is going on in there. I'm heartened by your news. I might empty one, or have a poke about to see what is happening.

We've only one tattie that has sprouted, planted in the bed next to the side of the house (under the central heating flue), its foliage looks good, but is only about 8" tall, so not sure if we are going to be having any spuds from it for xmas, but then again, they were only ones from the supermarket and were just thrown in at the last minute, so we will have to wait and see!

I left mine way too late to plant due to health and work. I have a couple of shoots through now but think I have more chance of enjoying new potatoes for my birthday rather than Christmas!! Never mind, all good fun to see if it can be done. Can't put them in the plastic greenhouse as it disintegrated last weekend with the winds we had here! New 'proper' greenhouse due to be put up over the Christmas break so should have better success next year!

fingers crossed that there is more below the soil than above... mine look rather unimpressive as I didn't keep enough of an eye on the frost!

I wouldn't say we have had a huge harvest, but lovely new potatoes on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. And today I havested another pot, for tomorrow's feast. And still one more pot to go!

I got... two spuds! Could balance them both on a teaspoon. Together.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find enough spuds for 3 meals in the pots I thought I had lost to blight.

I had not emptied them out and while I was pulling sprouts and swede to take with us to our daughters on Christmas eve I decided to tip the pots up and there they were - loads of lovely new potatoes - small but perfectly formed and absolutely delish.
