  • How deep for beetroot, cucumber and courgettes

    Good Afternoon

As I'm new to this, I haven't a clue what I'm doing but enjoying it immensely. Normally I wouldn't considered getting my hands dirty. Anyway, I'm growing everything in pots and could really do with knowing how deep the roots are for beetroot, cucumbers and courgettes so that I know how big a container to put them in. I'm also attempting to grow leeks and sweetcorn but I reckon a grow bag turned on end will suffice for those, although I could be wrong, it has been known

Ive sown my Beetroot about 2cm down in a small trench, the cucumbers and courgettes are in pots still, growing before going out in the greenhouse.

Cucumbers and courgettes I did last year in builders buckets, but you'll find most veg will grow happily in flower buckets (free from Asda) which are about 14" deep, just don't crowd them. Try imagining at what size you want to harvest your veg and if possible plant them that distance apart, or sow quite thickly and thin out to the spacing you want.

I never knew that, do you just go up and ask for them?

            Hi there,

If you go to ASDA at about 8.30pm just ask a member of staff in the fruit and veg aisle and they will say how many... ask for 15 and they don't bat an eye lid and they are free!!! It's a great way of recycling and all my container veg look so great at the moment!

            Good luck

              Free pots

I did the same at Morrisons, I asked staff if the had any used flower buckets and she went away and came back with 20 !!

              Totally free !!

I grow all my tomato's and peppers in them in the greenhouse :-)

You usually have to drill some holes in the bottoms as they don't have any drainage holes in them.

Which Morrisons did you go to Daz? The one at Hillsborough in Sheffield sell their buckets. Asda are happy to give theirs away at any time, you just ask at Customer Services.

See above WW. They are particularly fond of getting rid of them after things like Mothering Sunday when they are overrun with empty buckets!

All these years I've been buying buckets of flowers for LadyWayne and they give them away - for free!?

                      I feel done.
