I grew themlast year, outside. they came but mmmm not eactly much of a crop and I couldn't ever work out when to pick, some I picked to soon and the kernals were a bit under developed some I picked too late and the kernals were soft The once I got on time were lovely, better than the supermarket ones (which cost a fortune and are my kids favourate) however, if you are short of space I'd give them a miss, plent of space then why not, you could try them with some companion planting. Just dont expect many per plant (about 5 if I remember right)

Am now happy - I can get out in the polytunnel again with the warmer weather.
I agree with welsh veg grower. If you are short of space I wouldn't really grow them unless you combine them with the three sisters system, which I read somewhere in here.
I grew them last year and got a better crop than expected, but it's hard to get them at the right time. If they grow a bit too big the centre gets really tough.
They are a fun thing to grow if you've got children though...
We grew them last year for the first time. You pick them a few days after the tassels appear, rather than waiting for them to wilt, as with large corns. You need to get it 'just right' because if you leave them too long they go very tough.
We only grew a few plants so the crop was not enormous, but the taste was fantastic.
Thanks Valmarg. That sound hopeful. Had visions of getting nothing at all. If I only have to pick them on the right day... well....should be able to manage that.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
Me too! first time growing these, i have just actually put some in to germinate, apparently the trick is topick the minature cobs regularly before pollination to promote further mini cob production...............good luck everyone - cant wait to campare notes in a few months!
The closer to nature I become the more alive I am!

Good luck Alice, picking on the right day for me last year was a washout. Middle daughter gave birth to grandson on expected date, but then both had to be taken to special care unit at Addenbrookes Hospital, which left me with a full time job, two other grandchildren to care for, and an allotment full of crops needing picking. Unfortunately the children came first and the sweetcorn and a few other things went past their sell-by date. The good news is that grandson is now doing really well, though he will need further surgery in July this year (I'm looking after the other 2 again) but at least this time it is planned.
I'm sowing them too for the first time this year, so no idea what to expect. Can anyone advise how tall their's grew last year. Not sure yet where to plant them!

Mine grew up to 5ft2. I know it precisely as it's my height too...
