  • My first attempt at leek grass ......

So following Snadges destructions I gave my leek flowers a haircut then stood back and waited. Then to my horror the wind bent the stem and it started dying off. Oh dear ..what to do ? So I left it just to see until the stem looked completely dead. Cut the flower head off and carefully transported it home. Then very very carefully picked off the little bulbs and planted them ......and now look at them . They are growing How amazing is that , I really thought there was no hope ......thanks Snadge for giving me the gift of leek grass

Ok, I'm going to be brave here and asked:

"What on earth is leek grass?"

    Please

It's baby leeks growing out of what was the leek flower head . They come truer to type than saving seed . (so I've read )

You get your leek flower heads, give them a haircut and then wait until bulbils form. Then plant them up. Hence - leek grass.

just a word of caution in case of disappointment. The bulbils will very frequently develop botrytis and rot off quite quickly. To prevent that, give the bulbils a bath in a soultion of domestos and water to kill any pathogens. I use 25 parts water to 1 bleach and leave them soaking for 20 mins or so although some people will put the whole leek head into the solution and leave it there for a couple of days. Be sure to rinse them off well in clean water before planting out.

                How about onion grass?

I grew Hungarian red Ham Onions last year and was unable to source any seed for this year. A couple of the ham onions went to seed so I thought, sod it, i'll shave one of the seed heads and see what happens.

Today I just planted out a trayful of mini red ham onions off the seedhead with a single blade of grass on each.

So there's another party trick for you binners! I'll just have to wait and see if they are as successful as leeks!

Now now Missus you didn't ask . Really best to do it with bulbils or grass but if you haven't had them collapse so far you may be ok.
