It's a waste of the plant's energy- you want stems not flowers!

Mine all flowered last year in the that really hot and dry April but all good so far this year and the plants seem especially vigorous this year so rhubarb all round

I recone you spot on there TS,the last 2 years and this 1 have thrown up several flower stalks on 1 plant,when you think back we have had very dry springs,then the heat,no wonder they got the wronge messages,i chop mine of as soon as they appear,in fact i go on a hunt below the leaves,i appear to have different types,as in a crown of very green thin stems,1 comes up laster in the year,both these have a more triangular shape stems,others are tyour regular red one's,feeding does nothing to help,am thinking of hoiking the green ones out ,sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these

On the rhubarb subject... Mine seems rather small this year.
Some possibilities:
* I've cut down some surrounding trees and bushes, so it's not been growing up searching for the light
* It finished really early last year after a long dry spell, so it's not got as much vigour
* It's hungry?
* It's still quite early and I'm inpatient!

I have 2 poor specimens both planted near the compost but under a fir tree.
Last autumn my OH decided to put about 3 buckets of or compost round one and leave the other- and I've been watering it lots.
The difference this Spring is astounding.
Maybe feed and water it and generally talk to it.I'm sure it will appreciate the extra light."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Mine flowered last year and I took them out quick sticks, this year ( about 4 - 5 years old ) its the best its ever been, I have a couple of varieties and mixed them up so no idea which is which lolGardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache

No sign of flowers on mine so far but no doubt there will be before long. Three crowns grown from seed last year are looking good but wont pick any from them this year.

Mine regularly flower because they just don't get the cold weather where they are planted. Until I read your last post^^^^ I was going to say that if they have too many growth points they will do this and not just early on. That doesn't stack up with mine as they flowered the last two years after very cold winters but this year they're showing no signs and it was a much milder winter. However, flowers did follow dry springs and this year there's been quite a bit of rain round here as oppose to the last few years.Originally posted by marchogaeth View Post
