Hi - I've heard you can plant peas for over wintering and I've got some Meteor seeds ready to go..but what do you cover them with? Wire netting to stop mice and birds or a cloche? And if so, what sort of material? I don't really understand how to use cloches - do you have to keep removing them to water? do you have to enclose the ends? Sorry for all the questions!

I'd probably use a netting cloche, to keep the birds off, probably something like this:

Err, don't worry, this link does work (even though the Title is a bit weird)
Peas are really hardy, so won't need any weather protection.Last edited by Pumpkin Becki; 23-11-2009, 11:35 AM.

I wouldn't sow all of them now (maybe half) because you will lose some to mice, pigeons, gales and possibly rot. It won't be your fault, but might discourage you, so keep some for March sowing too.

We sowed over winter peas last year (as well as garlic & onions). We started off trying to keep them fleeced, but with some of the strong winds this time of year, we found it hard and opted to leave them uncovered as we still had plenty of seeds for later & successional sowing. Even with all those hard frosts and snow we had last year, they came up beautifully.
Here they are taken 30th May (please excuse weird caging around them, I have 2 free range bunnies with a taste for fresh & organic food!)
