Not sure but it is probably to do with running to seed if you plant to early.

Its a fine balance.......too early and they bolt.............too late and they don't make sizeable swedes. I do both and my first lot are just showing in the plant modules!

I potted on my first sowings last weekend. I succession sow a few each time, so that whatever the weather I get a decent crop. Apart from last year when I sowed a large batch and they all got trounced in a couple of days by cabbage whites. Never doing that again!!! Little and often, is my mantra.

I've (almost) given up trying to grow swede (they don't like my light sandy soil). I've only managed to dig one in the last 5 years of trying.

I had no luck with swedes until I started sowing them in modules and transplanting them..........give it a try TS.
Still haven't grown the monster swede I remember from my childhood though. Pinching them from the farmers field to hollow out for Halloween lanterns.
