    Turning green tomatoes red

    I'm worried summer is over and my tomatoes won't ripen. I currently have loads of green money makers.
    I maybe making this up but in sure my grandpa used to put them in a brown paper bag with an apple!
    Is this right, does it help ripen them?
    Or does anyone have any suggestions?

    Bananas are more commonly used, but apples too give off ethylene - the gas that ripens tomatoes - so either will work.

      If they are under cover I wouldn't worry to much, there's time yet.

          Still, I wouldn't rush. There was a thread on here a few years ago where people were harvesting in October/November. The recommendation is to put the green toms in the dark in a cupboard in the house (right sort of temperature) and just keep checking, you can be getting them through to Christmas.

            Thanks everyone, I will leave them till September and see where we are then.
            Fingers crossed we get a bit more sun.

              If you are growing onions, let them dry out in the greenhouse. I have just strung up 20lbs that have been drying out in the greenhouse for 2 weeks and the unwanted dry stems are now under the tom plants. Works a treat every year.

                Not many of my Tom have turned red yet but I'm not too worried.

                  A friend of mine says that when she has a banana she keeps the skin, breaks it into strips lengthwise and drapes it over her tomato trusses on the plant. I don't know if it works but she swears by it.

                    I made some banana chutney last week so had a load of skins. I put them under my outside Tom's and they've been ripening a treat.
