  • Underwater greenhouse last summer - bought one of these.....

After my roots sitting in water last year and crops disappointing I've bought one of these.....

Quadgrow Best Selling Planter | Greenhouse Sensation

Compost in the pots then hydroponic feeding from the reservoir below. Sat on top of the soil in my greenhouse........

Hoping for a bumper crop.......less watering too cause you can hook it up to a water butt. I will!

    Loving my allotment!

For one moment, I thought this was one of the Expert threads
Do let us know how you get on with it Newton while I work out how to cobble one together out of of flower buckets

I did something much less technical: I had a bit of string buried in the compost, leading out of the top of the tomato's pot. The other end of the string was in a bowl of water.
The string sucks up the water as needed

Still, if you've got £43 to burn, you go for it. It's reusable of course, so it's only one payment.

Cheaper alternative is the self watering pots from Lidls. Each pot takes 2 or 3 tomato plants and need topped up with water after a few days. Have to admit I do have autopots (really the same as Quadgrow) and they are fab. Need to save up more Amazon vouchers to buy some more.

It was the Expert insertion of Advertising links, Ap, that threw me

Spend money, all you need is scrounged container to hold water,if got holes in,line it with whatever,i usually sit the flower buckets straight in,there are a few ways you can adapt,if going away for a while, stand the pots on a couple of bricks/tiles,and set a drip feed up,if you wish,as TS says, put something to act as a wick from soil to water,

After last summers rain,i think we could end up like the old inca/aztec floating gardens, really amazing plots,it wouldnt matter how much it rained then,if we went the whole hog, human sacrifices, there might be objections, until the tax rate was fixed..

I will try to make another from bits and pieces for the greenhouse too! Great idea VC. TS I got some discount. It was only £40........ Hope it will be usable for many years though.......I like the idea and it seemed like a good solution to the flooding problem.

When you think of all the effort that goes into a failing crop. Hours and hours of work.......and love.....then it is heartbreaking for the weather to have such an adverse affect on your veggies.....

Thereore I thought the new methods might be a better solution. I will keep you advised as to how it goes.......

I'm relying on you Newton to make one and compare it with the real thing, then report back on the pros and cons of each. Just putting it in my Diary..........

We are both going to VC. I will put it in my diary too! Anyone else joining in.......it is a good product!

                        I was thinking

Aldi trough or similar......though the buckets meet to be set hi on a lid thingy to allow for the self watering trou to be deep....
                        Morrisons buckets...obviously!
                        Capillary matting wicks......not Wickes!

Hydroponic feed.....bought in from one of the drug growing suppliers.......

I made 5 of These last year out of MFB's.......the only addition I made was to put a float in the pipe so I could see when the reservoir needed filling up. They worked a treat & cheap as chips.........
