  • When buying onion sets

Well, I've got the allotment, and now I have the seed catalogue from our local association. Never having done any veg growing before, how many onions/how long a row of onions am I likely to get from 2.5kg of onion sets? I'm considering 2.5kg each of Red Baron, Sturon, and Golden Gourmet Shallots. Will this give me a reasonable amount, or will I only end up with 20 or so of each?

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but beginning to feel a bit lost with it all.

    Cheers,

    Andrew.

Get yourself a copy of Joy Larkcom 'Grow your own vegetables' - has masses of very useful info, aimed at those who know nothing to those who know lots!

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grow-Your-Ow...3511531&sr=1-1

She says - 'For maximum yield of medium onions space 15cm apart each way, or grow in rows 25cm apart, spacing 5cm apart. For larger bulbs increase the spacing in the rows to 10cm, or space them 18cm apart each way.'

We grow in raised beds and space ours 15cm apart each way.

      Know your Onions..!

Hello seniab, welcome to the vine. Its not a ridiculous question, how are you supposed to find answers without asking.

This snippet according to DT brown Catalogue... A 250 g pack contains approximately 80 sets, enough to plant a 8-9m (25-30ft) row.

      hope that helps.

Good evening seniab, from 2.5kg you should get a massive 5oo sets for the onions and about 100 shallots sets. at about six inches, 150mm, apart thats a long row.

        Hope this helps.
        God bless all of us.

By planting a total of 7.5 Kg of onion sets you'll certainly have a reasonable amount of onions, not only for you, but for the rest of the street! Not much room for anything else in your allotment though!

Thats the equivalent of 30X 250 gramm packs????

                Thanks for the help everyone.

Having decided that it was unlikely I'd need somewhere in the region of 2000 onions and shallots I have ordered 1kg of Sturon and 1 kg of Red Baron, with just a little 250g pack for the Shallots. I think that should give me plenty.

One of the problems is that never having ordered any veg seeds/onion sets before, I was going partly off the price of these as compared with the finished article in the shop. It makes me realise just how expensive shop-bought veg is. Mind you, I suppose farmers have to make a living too.

                As I say, many thanks,

                Andrew.

I can't be doing with kilos and rows, I need real numbers!
I figure I will eat at least 2 onions every week, multiply that by 52 weeks, means I planted about 100 sets. Plus a couple for luck!
With garlic, I figured I use a bulb a fortnight (that's 24 bulbs), and you get about 7 cloves on a bulb, so that's 7 new bulbs from each clove put in, so I ordered 4 bulbs plus one for luck.
My plan for French beans went awry - I'd figured 2 ounces dried beans from each plant; I use 4 ounces a week, so about 100 plants. Unfortunately the wet and the slugs did for more than half of them, so next year I'll double up
