  • Garlic & Chilli spray for caterpillars, whitefly & aphids

    It's not a pesticide, it's a dressing

this is but one recipe. There are others!

    Garlic & Chilli spray

Blend 4oz of crushed garlic & chopped chillies, 1 pint of water and 2tsp of soft soap (Use potash based soft soap ,not anything that contains caustic soda as it will harm plants).

Mix well. Strain the mixture through a fine cloth (muslin or old tights).
Dilute the solution in 1 gallon of water.
    Use immediately.

    or:

1 clove of garlic crushed into a pint of water. Boil it for a few mins, strain it into a sprayer. I've used this, it works but needs repeating every few days

I'll give this a go too. If it doesnt get rid of them then I will stir-fry them instead !

Last year it worked fine. This year; rubbish. Very strange.

I might give this a try for my aphid problem. One thing: is it the capsaicin in the chilli that wards them off? If so then would enough dissolve in the water to have any effect (as capsaicin is oil-soluble)?

Capsaicin doesn't dissolve in water does it? I'm thinking about when you eat chillies and then drink water: the pain intensifies. Dairy (oil) takes the pain away

My brassicas are normally caked in the white stuff and crawling with little white bodies, but I've just picked a carrier bag full of kale, PSB and cabbage and ... nada. Not a single one

We had a very mild winter, so I thought they'd be worse, not better

Maybe this garlic spray really does work *crosses fingers

Thanks for posting this, I'm going to try it out this weekend on a lupin that's infested with aphids
Will post back if it works

Also I've had an idea for making it, I've got an old filter coffee machine that's not used any more
I'll put the garlic/chilli where the coffee would normally go, then the mixture I get in my coffee pot I'll let it cool, add a bit of washing up liquid stick it in my sprayer and away I go, hope it works
