  • Wasp Stings - avoid 31 July

apparently the time you are most at risk of being stung is the last week in July and first week of August (roughly), with 31 July being the median day, ie bang in the middle : Worst week of the year for insect stings and bites

Personally, I can't remember the last time I was stung, by wasp or bee (I don't count the year I was picking flowers and picked a bee by mistake. It didn't really sting me, more like a mild electric shock)

My OH was stung by a wasp on his hand a few years ago.
His hand swelled and traveled up to his elbow within minutes

Good job I was there to take him to hospital as our lottie is down a path with a locked gate, and sometimes the mobile phone doesn't have a signal....and there was no-one else around on the site!

I was stung by a wasp when I was a teenager- it was sitting round the far side of the dishcloth in the kitchen just waiting for someone to sting!!!!......put me off housework for ever......

2sheds.....So you think we should stay in bed on the 31st with a big block of chocolate just to be on the safe side???

I have been stung by wasps several times and they don't usually bother me but when I was stung on the hand by a bee a few years back, it felt like I'd been hit with a hammer across my hand, the next day my whole arm was aching. How can something so small pack such a punch?
An elderly aquaintance of mine has hives in his garden and, over the years had been stung by the bees on many occasions with no ill effects, but the last time he was stung by one, he had a very bad reaction that kept him in bed with a high fever for two days.

I got a wasp spring last year - it hurt like hell and I thought I was just being a big girls blouse. Next thing, anaphalaxic shock, trip to hospital and now I'm doomed to carry an epipen and antihistamines forever. So thanks for the warning about the dangerous weeks twosheds (I got stung on Good Friday flying in the face of all wasp tradition!)

T Lady, just wondering what anthihistamines do you carry with you. My OH has been stung twice and so i would like to have something on hand in case it happens again.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.

Some time ago Compost King was stung on the hand by a wasp hiding in a glove. No reaction at the time but a month or so later Septecimia set in and nearly did for him!

I've only ever had one wasp sting in my (almost) 50 years and that was on July 31st last year. We were on holiday though, so the fact that I was surrounded by a sticky picnic to attract them and probably showing more flesh than is normal, - so they had more to aim at - was probably the reason.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I have been stung by both wasps and bees , give me a wasp eveery time. Never been in so much pain, when stung by a bee which was sunbathing on my washing. brought my washing in , and the bee stung me. Makes me shudder just remembering

Thought i might just add, I rescued a drowning bee from a plant saucer the other day. After a few minutes drying off it flew away. I'm still very bee friendly

Sorry, been off line for the weekend so I'm slow to answer ...

I carry Piriton - the one that you take one per day, not the one every four hours type. If I do get stung again I'll take two instantly and hope that I don't need the adrenaline pen. When they rushed me to the doctor I think he gave me about 5 tablets of antihistamine and five of steroid but I don;t seem to be able to get hold of any steroid tablets!

I went and got tested at one of those allergy clinics and they say that you are very rarely allergic to both wasps and bees, it tends to be one or the other. So you'll find that you react very differently - for me, a bee sting should be fine but a wasp sting can take me out for good!
                              Cheers
