What says summer more than a bowl of freshly harvested home-grown salad leaves, dressed simply with juicy, ripe tomatoes, crisp, refreshing cucumber slices and peppery radishes? Salad leaves are easy to grow and offer bountiful pickings, with cut-and-come-again varieties offering a second, third and sometimes even fourth harvest. Most salad leaves can be sown between March and September, and now is an ideal time to directly sow your seeds straight outside. Here, Neil Howick from Simply Seed picks his favourite five varieties to try this year. For more information about Simply Seed and to see the company’s huge range of seed click here.
