Make Lard Cakes for Birds

By Sian Bunney

Our feathered friends absolutely love fat-rich food at this time of year, providing birds with warmth and energy. Lard cakes are a great means of delivering this, and best of all, they don’t always have to be bought. If you have ten minutes to spare, you can use all sorts of kitchen scraps such as porridge, oats, grated cheese and peanuts – just mix it all up with some suet or lard and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours and you will have lardy treats! Kennedy Wild Bird Food have put together this handy recipe for you to try.

Things you need
Raisins
Peanuts
Suet/lard
Grated cheese
Scissors
String
Mixing bowl
Yoghurt pots or paper cups
Plate

If you are making the cakes with children, then bear in mind that this activity is not suitable for those with nut allergies. Only use suet and lard – don’t be tempted to use turkey fat, as this doesn’t set well.

Step one
Poke a small hole into the bottom of the yoghurt pot/paper cup.

Step two
Thread the string through and tie a knot on the inside of the paper cup.

Step three
Add all of the ingredients, except the lard, in a mixing bowl.

Step four
Melt the lard in a pan (about one-third of a block).

Step five
Add the warm fat to the bowl and combine with your fingertips.

Step six
Mix well until the combination absorbs and starts holding together.

Step seven
Scoop your warm mixture into the cup. Place in the fridge overnight. Once set, peel away the pot.

Step eight
You now have a wonderful, rich bird cake. Add a few twigs to give your garden visitors a nice perch.
