Next year heralds the London Olympics, and while many people associate the Games solely with sport, the wide array of activity to beautify the capital’s parks, open spaces and town centres means it’s an Olympic year for the horticultural and green industries as well. So why not brush up your own green skills (or discover some new ones)? Capel Manor College is the largest land-based college in London, and offers 180 courses in the areas of horticulture, animal care, floristry, garden design, arboriculture and countryside studies and saddlery. We’re also launching new courses this January in garden design, woodland management and animal care.
When it comes to the Olympics, garden design student Linda Ham knows a thing or two as she gained the role of planting specialist intern with LOCOG, the Olympics organising committee. The 45-year-old advises everyone from individual gardeners to local councils on Olympic-themed planting schemes in purples, sky blue, orange, yellow, and green.
She decided to turn her back on her languages career last January, taking a Level 2 qualification which gives an in depth understanding of soils and plants, as well as developing drawing, graphics and design skills. She followed this with a Level 3 qualification, and has also found work at the RHS flower shows. Mrs Ham said: “Whilst I loved teaching languages, changing career was an opportunity not to be missed and now I get paid for doing something I absolutely adore. Coming to Capel Manor has opened up so many avenues for me in the field of horticulture.”
Capel Manor is the largest land-based studies college in London, operating across five centres which include Enfield, Crystal Palace Park and Regent’s Park. As well as a range of vocational and academic courses throughout the year, we’ve also teamed up with Kew’s chief botanical illustrator to offer three-day courses for those who wish to learn the art of botanical painting. Options range from short 10-week taster courses to full two-year diplomas for those who are looking to change their careers.
Advice sessions run across all centres in December.
