  • Japanese Wineberry

Anyone grow Japanese Wineberry? I got a plant from RHS Wisley last week, and wondered if it needs any special treatment.

I've grown them in the past and personally I think they are a waste of space, thorny & tiny fruit. You may like them though.

I like them. Yes the fruit is small but very intense in flavour and lovely cooked with apples

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Oh, with regards growing, I just treat the same as a blackberry

Got to move mine as in wrong place so not had any fruit for ages.

They are very decorative when sun catches the red spines, which are harmless.

Thanks all. I've wanted one since I read a Bob Flowerdew book about fruit (can't find book now).

Will just let it grow and see what I get. I understand it is self-fertile.

I have it next to the mother of all redcurrants, which is about 8 foot by 8 foot by 8 foot, about 15 years old and produces more berries than anyone could possibly eat. I do try, though, as I really like rather tart fruits (I also eat the damsons from my 35 foot tree raw, if the pigeons don't get to them first).
