  • Peas flowering too early

    Hi there

I have been growing some Winter peas (meteor) and have noticed a couple of flowers on the plants. However, the plants are only about 6 inches high. I'm sure my pea plants were much bigger last year when this happened. Do I need to do anything about this? Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Samara

Hello Samara - welcome to the Vine. Where are you growing your peas? Inside or outside, pots or open ground?

      Thank you!

They are outside in my vegetable patch so open ground I guess. I have some growing on a hot bed a few feet away which are much bigger and seem a more appropriate size to be flowering.

My broad beans have also started flowering and are about a foot tall. I can't remember from last year whether this was the size they started to flower but I do remember that they grew to about 4ft in height.

I can't believe I will get any peas from the tiny plants that are flowering but was wondering whether I ought to pinch out the flowers?

      Best wishes

      Samara

It's been so cold this year that everything is only just starting to grow properly. You could pinch out the flowers, but then there's a risk that the plants still won't grow much and you may not get any more flowers.

Whereabouts are you? If you add your location (nearest town) to your profile it will show up on your posts. You can see from mine that I live in Lowestoft.

Many thanks, have done so! Ill try pinching out the flowers tomorrow as they aren't currently big enough to support a pea pod so I have nothing to lose!

I thought it was odd! My broadies and peas have got flower buds on too!

My meteor seed packet says very dwarf.

Mine in the green house are massive though and almost ready.

They're not supposed to get very big, though i think I may have read a description on real seeds' (?) catalogue that said some people did find they shot off into space (so to speak) rather than dwarfing

I think mine are suffering from drought (4" tall and flowering). We've not had any decent rain for nearly 2 months now

The plants think they're dying so are trying to set seed

We have three days of rain coming - thank goodness I say. I thought this may be why the rhubarb is bolting and flowering. Three heads cut off today and I must have cut that off already. I'm soaking every couple of days at the moment.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one having these issues! I've nipped out the flowers on the peas so I'll see what happens. I've left the flowers on the broadies though as they are probably more like a foot tall (ish!).

Good luck with all of yours!
