    Help!
I planted some asparagus last spring. They threw up a few shoots last year and i duly let them go to fern. I put lots of beautiful (!!) well rotted manure on last autumn and covered them up during the winter with some wood chips. However nothing has happened to them and no sign of any growth.
what Have I done wrong? and is there anything I can do to save them (assuming there is a problem).
They cost a bomb so wanting to know how I can salvage. (or are they just late cause of the weather?
    Thanks Guys.

Can't understand why you covered them with wood chips.

I planted mine earlier this year and have no sign of them yet I'm sure they will be along shortly though.

It was more like wood shavings from horse bedding. It was semi rotted and I thought it would protect them from the cold !!. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

I noticed my first two spears on Friday, both from the same crown. By today about half the plants are sprouting so the warm weather has really brought them on .

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Planted 36 crowns on our second plot. Lots of spindly little shoots coming through this week, so we look set for lots of smelly wee this time next year - only mine though, apparently Mrs Vince's doesn't.

I'm not sure they need much protection from the cold. I sowed some from seed this time last year, 5 germinated and survived to be repotted into coffee cups. They sat outside all winter and 4 are now putting up tiny little spears - unlike the shop bought "thongs" which I planted in flower buckets about a month ago with nothing showing (the one that hasn't put any spears up was stood on by the dog but I'm still hoping it'll show). I'll get them put into their permanent bed in the next few weeks.

Ah, that is all very reassuring. Actually, its been 24degrees here in the lakes today, so I have just popped up to lottie for a quick look. After some gentle searching, it transpires that one spear is on its way...YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!

                          Good news!

I planted three lots of three varieties in sept/Oct - the purple one - early variety has shot up this week... the others are still to show, although there was one early, one mid and one late so fingers remain crossed!
