    The end of my garden is under mown grass now,I intend to put in raised beds (say10")for vegtables of all sorts what's the obvious problems I face,such as compost type, etc as there was no topsoil originally (stolen in about 1954)now just a few inches of council compo' dressing.

    Topsoil is going to be under the lawn that you have. Dig a bit out and see how deep it is (mine's about 8" before I hit the yellower, sandy subsoil)

      As TwoSheds says, what's under your grass? If the soil will grow grass, it will grow vegetables too.
